Introduction
Welcome to my first devlog! I'm Alex, former software engineer and noob video game dev. I'll be updating this devlog as I work on Teemo's Domain, a 2D farming sim RPG made in Godot. I don't expect to ever finish or release this game since I've never felt super passionate about the idea of making a farming sim (Stardew Valley took ~ 4 years, they take a lot of work!). I do however hope that people interested in my game dev journey will follow along and learn something new with me :D
I'm hoping to update this devlog at least weekly as I implement and experiment with new gameplay systems and mechanics. The goal is that each new devlog will go in-depth on whatever new feature I've implemented, followed by a new build for readers to test it out themselves. The game in its current state is more like a showcase of gameplay systems I've implemented though, and I expect it will be for a while. Eventually, I'd like to make this game a sort of playable demo with a satisfying gameplay loop. I have sort of an idea of what that would look like (farm/sell crops, buy/feed animals, kill different mobs for loot, use that loot to expand your farm). Here's what I wrote for this game idea a while ago:
## (name wip) sproutlands cozy farm sim but make it evil like pal world and a little twisted at night like cult of the lamb
- combat like tloz, fluid, combos, standard weapon/toolkit (sword, b&a, magic slot)
- during the day, early game, it's a normal farm sim. eventually early-mid to late game it becomes a bit more automated and industrialized. maybe have pets/animals to work your crops? need to flesh it out
- when night falls you're encouraged to go on runs for gear/mats for your farm. would it be dungeoning? cult of the lamb dungeoning got p boring, procedural mines in sdv aren't bad. hmm
- skills? make it simple like osrs/valheim?
- would be cool to implement relationships in the game but make your partner useful in combat or helping around farm
So yeah, as much as I'd LOVE to implement each thing on this list to fulfill the original vision I did have for the game, I don't really have the time/commitment/skill to dump all my eggs into one basket and lock in on this game for however many years. I'd love to put all my focus and attention on one game eventually, but for now I'd prefer to work on many small, different games and pick up new skills and technologies so I can develop myself into being a great game developer.
Anyway, enough yappage. I do hope y'all will follow along with the devlogs, and please feel free to ask any questions or give any sort of criticisms!
